KPL FOYA Nominees and Probable Winners

Coaches of the 16 clubs that participated in the Kenyan Premier League 2013 season met on Thursday morning and nominated the best performers of the year. The winners will be revealed and feted on November 20 in Nairobi.

Here is a list of the nominees and my predictions.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Allan Wanga – AFC Leopards
Dan Serunkuma – Gor Mahia
Jacob Keli – KCB
Shaban Kenga – Bandari
David Owino – Gor Mahia

I think Owino will win this. Despite scoring important goals, the reigning player of the year Dan Serunkuma has not been consistent. Wanga only showed up in the last third of the season. Owino played a big part in Gor’s title quest with his goals and defensive prowess throughout the season.

GOALKEEPER OF THE YEAR

Wycliffe Kasaya – Sony Sugar
Sammy Okinda – KCB
Jerim Onyango – Gor Mahia
Wilson Obungu – Bandari
Duncan Ochieng – Sofapaka

Jerim will beat the rest hands down. He conceded the least number of goals, kept many cleansheets and won the league. Okinda, Oburu and Kasaya to follow in that order.

DEFENDER OF THE YEAR

David Owino – Gor Mahia
Felly Mulumba – Sofapaka
Mohammed Shariff – Bandari
John Odhiambo – KCB
David Mwangi – Mathare United

This is another category that will definitely go to Owino ‘Calabar.’ He was simply the best and will face little competition. Mulumba and Shariff are likely to be the runners up.

MIDFIELDER OF THE YEAR

Brian Osumba – KCB
Shaban Kenga – Bandari
Paul Were – AFC Leopards
Francis Kahata – Thika United
Peter Opiyo – AFC Leopards

I expect the Ingwe duo of Were and Opiyo will fight it out for this one. It could go either way but I can bet on Were. Pinchez did not play for most of the first leg although he was massive for Leopards in the second leg. However, Were’s contribution in attack was more significant.

NEW PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Patilla Omoto – AFC Leopards
Moses Mudavadi – Kakamega Homeboyz
Stephen Wakhanya – Chemelil Sugar
Sammy Meja – Thika United

James Nandwa has sparingly used Omoto in the second leg but he is a strong contender for this. I must say that I am a little disappointed with the coaches here. I expected the likes of Kenga, Noah Wafula and Joseph Wanyonyi in this category.

COACH OF THE YEAR

David Ouma – Sofapaka
John Kamau – Thika United
Twahir Muhiddin – Bandari
Abdalla Juma – KCB
Robert Matano – Tusker

This is a tough one but I have a gut feeling that Muhiddin will take it. The competition will between Juma and Muhiddin. Both have had brilliant seasons taking their teams to fourth and sixth respectively, their best ever performances.

MY Team of the Year:

Jerim Onyango; David Owino, Felly Mulumba, Mohammed Shariff, Sammy Meja; Peter Opiyo, Brian Osumba, Shaban Kenga, Paul Were; Jacob Keli, Allan Wanga

See you on Wednesday. All the best to the nominees.
